Warm Up Tri

Yesterday I competed in a Warm Up tri.  By warm up, there were two categories: 200 yd swim, 10k bike and 1.5 mi run or 400 yd swim, 10k bike and a 1.5 mi run.

My main complaint with the whole tri was that our registration was altered by time and distance without much notice.  We (Joel, Aimee and I) registered for 9:10 am for the 200yd event.  When we were emailed Friday night for the wave times, I was at 8:35am for the 200yd and Joel & Aimee were at 9:10 for the 400 yd event.  It was a little frustrating as we were all looking forward to racing together and only doing the 200.

I played in the B team roller derby game on Saturday night and was home around midnight.  Knowing my race time was 8:35am I knew going to bed was important.  I'm not sure about you, when I've just worked out-sleep is usually the last thing on my mind.  I relaxed with Joel a little just chatting and then showered and got ready for bed.  The alarm at 6:20am was way too earlier.  I still had to find all my swimming supplies for this race, as I had not totally prepared for this.

Swim=4:48
Wattbike + T1=19:26
Run=13:49
Total time=38:03

We arrive at the event and it's an outdoor pool, spin bike near the pool and 2 3/4 mile loops throughout the campus.  I wasn't fully prepared for the outdoor pool and just had to remind myself that the pool would be heated.  We arrived about 45 mins prior to my start time.  I got checked in, numbered and just waited.  I was able to set my bike up once the first wave started the run.

Then it was time to get in the pool.  I am not a strong swimmer.  It was warm and I had Joel and Aimee cheering me on as I swam.  I had to remind myself to slow down my legs, I kick them so much that I wear myself out unnecessarily.  I made it out of the water in 4:48.  I didn't have a ladder in my lane and wasn't thinking to swim to the ladder so I tried to pool myself out of the pool.  That took a little bit of time.  I'm sure this is only an issue in a pool tri.

Then it was time to put on my shoes and hop on the bike.  My feet slipped when trying to put them in the peddles (next time I'll bring my spin shoes and clip in) so I put them on top and just started peddling.  I didn't even grab my water with me on the bike.  I had to call Joel over to grab my bottle for me.  I think I did well on the bike.  I finished sub 19 mins on the bike-I can't remember my exact time for the bike.  Next up was the run, at the beginning of the run was 2 sets of stairs and then a slight incline to the first turn.  Luckily we had a downhill and then the rest was flat.  I didn't wear my garmin so I wasn't able to know my pace as I was running.  I did pass 2 people from my wave and just kept pushing forward.  I had some slight soreness as I went up the first hill as I haven't biked + ran in a really long time.  I was also sloshing the whole run as my feet were not dried off enough before putting my shoes on and while on a stationary bike-you don't have the wind to help dry you off.

I consider this a great time for not actually training.  I did tons of cross training and being more fit than the last time I did a triathlon July 2010.  I feel with some training in the water and transition I can kick some ass on a Sprint Tri.

The next warmup tri is March 25th and I plan on beating this time.

Check In-Photo Challenge-Feb Photo a day

I've been having a really good time making sure I take photos.  I was away this weekend and was a little crazy about making sure I got these photos in.  I've been doing this challenge on Instagram and posting them to twitter each day.  #febphotoaday

As a reminder, here's the challenge:

And here we go in order on as a collage.

Oh Monday

Today is rough.  I got home around midnight and couldn't fall asleep despite how exhausted I was.  I'm beat, tired, sore and getting sick.  I knew it'd be a tough weekend.  3 games in 3 days is tough.  And not getting much sleep on Saturday wasn't ideal for the game on Sunday.  We were in the room by 10pm and I couldn't fall asleep until after midnight.  We didn't have to be at the venue until 11am and yet I was wide awake at 7am.  I prepared, made sure to drink lots of water.  Didn't drink any soda.  Had no alcohol from Thursday til Sunday night after our last game.  It was a victory beer!  I had 3 Emergen-C throughout Saturday and Sunday.
I'm drinking an Emergen-C as I type this.  I want to kick this stuffiness and congestion.  And the rain outside (yay snow in Tahoe) is making it very difficult to get motivated to clean or do laundry.
I made some soup today and am keeping it low key with the weather.  Hoping to feel better by tomorrow.

Derby Derby Derby

Tomorrow morning we're off to Eugene for a tournament.  I'm so excited and nervous.  It's my first time playing on the A team roster (hello nerves) and it's at a tournament (hello double nerves) where I have to play 3 games (full games) in 3 days.  Luckily we are scheduled one for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  If we were doubling up, I'd be extra nervous.  I'm excited to be playing with all the fabulous ladies that are going on this trip.  We're flying (instead of our original plan of driving) and we will be all derby the whole time.

I'm going to hit hard, be agile, skate slow and fast, and of course follow all the leaders on the team.  I'll lead when I see fit and we will all play our hearts out.

Next week, I'll do a recap of the weekend.  I'm reminding myself of the photo challenges to do while I'm gone.  And here's what I'll look like all weekend!

Crazy Week

Is it really only Wednesday?  I feel like this week should be over....though that would mean I'd be at a roller derby tournament on our A team playing my heart out to come away with some wins this weekend.  And to be honest, I'm a little nervous.  This is the big leagues.  Those that inspired and intimidated me when I found this sport.

Sunday was our Super Bowl party and ever since then I feel like I'm just trying to catch up.

Monday was a crossfit workout and of course, endurance practice for roller derby.  And laundry.  Lots of laundry.  Then there was the final clean up from our party.

Tuesday is my weekly weigh in at Jenny Craig and it went very well this week.  I'm down 1.6 (take that super bowl party).  And it's my day off from exercise.  I did a lot of taping with painter's tape on the floor for furniture.  We also went back to our fave sushi place near our old apartment.  We're still trying to find a decent place near us...it's tougher than I thought.

Wednesday is usually my longer run of the week (4 miles is long) and derby practice.  This week I threw in crossfit as I'm flying on Friday morning to a roller derby tournament.  And I had lunch plans.  Yummy guacamole. Our landlord was here as well so I needed to be sure to be around to show him what needed his attention.
And it's only Wednesday.

Tomorrow I will run.  Hopefully 4-5 miles.  I need to get my legs working prior to this weekend.

Super Bowl and the commercials

I have a little confession to make....we hosted a Super Bowl party and I only saw less than 5 minutes of the game and the commercials.

I was busy mingling and hula hooping and making sure everyone else had what they needed.  And of course, when I heard someone scored I checked the squares to see if I was close to winning (I didn't win).

Though I'm catching up slowly on the commercials and this is my favorite thus far-M&Ms

Perfect Bloody Mary

As we were planning our Super Bowl party, I decided to have a Bloody Mary bar.  It was a huge hit!  With lots of additions to the normal bloody mary.

We started with Mr T's Bold and Spicy. And I added Vodka.  Put it in a pitcher on the table next to the additions in no particular order:
Bacon
Celery
Cocktail Onions
Pickled green beans
Olives
Pickle Spears
Horseradish
Pepper

I've heard of okra and asparagus but I wasn't sure if it should be pickled or fresh and realized we had plenty to get it going.

And here was my bloody mary-mix, bacon, pickle, green bean, pepper, and horseradish.

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!

Things I'm loving today:
Superbowl on Sunday!
Nike workout apparel including Nike Free +2 (so comfy)
Lululemon workout pants
Avocado (so yummy with a little pepper on it)
Pinterest-I love finding all the great DIY projects and yummy recipes

And the final thing is that while coming home from my workout I stopped to get some veggies for lunch and the cashier made a comment on me having just worked out.  I guess the workout was a great one as I looked as if I had just finished working out.  As they say, if you look pretty at the end, you didn't do it right!

Happy Groundhog Day

So I guess we have more winter-6 weeks to be exact.  Though if this is winter, I'll take it.  We've only had a few days of rain.  The weather doesn't require more than a light jacket.  And I've been out in sandals recently.  So bring on the sunshine and slightly cooler temps for the rest of winter!!

The only downside is we're heading to Tahoe soon and I want there to be good snow.  And if there's not much a winter then I'm doubting there will be fresh snow like trips in the past.

What was I thinking?

So the other day I posted on my facebook that I needed to sign up for an event to get into training mode and all of the sudden I've got like 4 events and I did 4 miles this morning.

First event is a duathlon, 2 mile run-10 mile bike-2 mile run in March.  I have been running and need to set up my bike trainer in the garage and can start training.

The next event is in May-it's a half marathon. Divas Half Marathon  My coach is doing it and it sounds like a few other derby girls might be interested.

The other event I liked was a 5k color run.  Check out this page.  This event is in July.

And the final event, the only event I have signed up for, is Tough Mudder.  In September in Tahoe.

Joel and I signed up last night-well I signed us up after talking about it.  It's a little scary but I'm welcoming the challenge to train and complete it.  To kick the course's ass!!!

I know I want to run Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half Marathon in December-last year it was at night and am hoping it's at night this year as well.

My 4 miles today wasn't as tough as I thought it would be.  The toughest part was not listening to myself when I wanted to stop.  I did stop and walk for one minute.  I set my nike app to a distance goal and I didn't quit before the distance said 4 miles.  I'm setting an alarm to run 2 miles in the morning.   This weekend is the Super Bowl and I know we'll have tons of good food so I'm preparing ahead of time.
